Meet the Artist

"Beading is definitely a gift of healing and every stitch that goes into my beadwork is filled with prayer and care, so that the person who wears my work is carrying positive energy from my pieces." - Killa Atencio

Moonlight Works was created by Killa Ch'aska Atencio, who comes from Listuguj First Nation in Mi'kmaq Territory (Quebec, Canada).

Proud of her Mi'kmaq and Quechua ancestry she enthusiastically shares and expresses her culture through her art. She began beading in 2012 and has not stopped since.  All jewelry is handmade using a variety of natural materials such as bone, shell, quill and leather. Every piece that is made is unique in the same way that every living thing is. No two breaths are the same.

A Dalhousie University graduate with a Degree in International Development, Killa has an incredible desire to help others and make the world a better place. Her beliefs are deep rooted in her cultural identity and her inspiration is drawn from the need she sees to stay connected to the ways of her ancestors, while having one foot in today's evolving world. As a daughter of the Eagle and Condor Prophecy, she dreams of bringing together Indigenous peoples from the North and the South through their unique cultures and identity, and she believes that Moonlight Works can help do so.

What's in a name?

The inspiration behind the name Moonlight Works comes from the artist's name. In the Quechua language, Killa Ch'aska translates to Moon Light, and in the Mi'kmaq culture, the Moon is thought of as a 'Grandmother' and a guiding light. It only seemed fitting to have that name represent Killa's work as it ties in both of her roots, the Mi'kmaq and Quechua.

"When you buy from an independent artist, you're buying more than just a thing. You are buying a piece of heart, a part of soul, a private moment in someones life. " - Rebecca Joy Plett
